Flexibility

What makes our systems so loved by analytical scientists? In part, their flexibility – the fully modular design allows for endless variations perfectly suited to each laboratory. By upgrading the system as and when you need, you can adapt to changing experimental and analytical requirements.

This flexibility is not just due to the modular design of our systems, but also the wide range of samples which can be examined: Large volume samples? High and low flow rates? Organic solvents? Binding at high temperatures? Binding of whole cells? All of these and more can be easily tested, because the SR7000DC/SR7500DC systems offer a flexibility of experimental design that is simply unmatched by competitors.

Designed to be easy to use, but highly adaptable in the hands of experts, our modular systems are the ideal instrument for serious scientists.

Here are some examples of how clients can use the extensive customisation available through SPR systems from XanTec.

Customisation example #1:
Developing the latest thermostable enzyme

Screening genes from deep-sea thermal vent bacteria has provided this biotech company with a potential blockbuster industrial enzyme. To verify substrate binding kinetics they use a SR7500DC system, adding the high-temperature module to push their enzyme to breaking point. Integrating a MALDI-TOF module allows them to determine the thermal breakdown products, identifying residues within the protein which can be modified for improved stability. All in all, a lot of value for one system.

Customisation example #2:
The power of light – developing a smart gel

World leaders in the construction of responsive polymers, this laboratory group is attempting to create biocompatible gels which can expand or contract in response to light – a first step on the road to biomimetic muscles. To gain detailed kinetic information they use a SR7000DC SPR system with the optional UV flow cell attachment – allowing real-time measurement of expansion and contraction. Able to test their ideas quickly and cheaply, these researchers are well on the way to optimising their ‘smart gel’.

Customisation example #3:
Optimising antibody-drug conjugates

Antibody-drug conjugates are a new weapon in the war against cancer, able to specifically bind to and kill tumour cells. But how do you optimise for binding specificity in the chaotic environment of the blood-stream? By immobilising antibodies to a chip within the XanTec microscope flow cell, pharmaceutical companies are able to simulate these conditions, allowing them to accurately determine the binding kinetics of their next blockbuster drug.

Customisation example #4:
Minimising safety issues in blood-vessel transplants

Building on a recent breakthrough in polymer science, this start-up aims to produce blood-vessel stents. Their first problem – to optimise the surface coating to prevent attachment of platelets, which would otherwise lead to blood clotting and thrombosis. The microscope flow cell available from XanTec bioanalytics allow them to pass platelets over their immobilised surface at the high flow rates and shear stress typical of blood vessels. Using this detailed kinetic data, the start-up is able to optimise their prototype in record time.

Customisation example #5:
Organic solvents and biofuels

After much work, this company has engineered a lipase which is active within hydrophobic solutions – vital for the next stage of biofuel production. To test substrate binding affinity, they examine the kinetics as their substrate flows over the immobilised protein. Luckily, the SPR system from XanTec is flexible enough to work in organic solvents – thus allowing simple, reliable characterisation of the new enzyme in its planned environment.

Quality

Good quality science needs good quality data – and this is where our SPR systems shine. Combining incredible detection capabilities and minimal noise, they excel in providing the data you need.

With minimal baseline drift and noise, the SR7500DC systems provide high-quality data for small molecule interaction studies. Coupling high dynamic range and a diverse set of possible analytes makes XanTec a solid choice for both industrial and research laboratories. Models certified for GLP/GMP environments are available, while the modular architecture allows easy integration into existing work-flows.

The excellent build quality associated with our systems is most apparent when working under ‘extreme’ conditions: in acidic or oxidizing conditions; with viscous solutions, organic solvents, and high temperatures. When pushing the extremes of what SPR can do, you can rely on SPR solutions from XanTec to back you up.

Price

High quality analysis that doesn’t cost the earth. Just a dream? Not in the case of the XanTec range of SPR components – due to their modular and flexible architecture, you only pay for the systems you need to use.

Furthermore, unlike many other systems, SR7000DC/SR7500DC instruments do not break your budget with disposables such as chips and fluidic systems. For many instruments the ongoing costs make up the lion’s share of the lifetime expenses, any variation in starting price is quickly outweighed by running costs. A good SPR instrument will work for many, many years, so these costs quickly add up – but you can minimise them by choosing a well-designed system from XanTec.

Example: SR7000DC vs Biacore X100

How important are running costs? Let’s compare two similar systems, our SR7000DC and the Biacore X100. The SR7000DC is a modular design with minimal maintenance costs (<€1000 per year), and an example cost of €84 per dextran chip. By comparison the X100 requires €150 per chip, while the integrated fluidics systems forces ongoing costs of €5000-8000 each year.

We can quite clearly see the outcome: significantly higher running costs over the life of the instrument – while missing all the advantages in flexibility provided by XanTec's modular system! Flexible and cost-effective, a SR7000DC SPR instrument is the perfect fit for every laboratory budget.

Summary

Flexibility. Quality. Price. No matter which of these attributes is most important to you, XanTec bioanalytics and Reichert Life Sciences will allow you to find the perfect solution.
